I've downloaded a software package from member area. It is not a zip file as I expected but some sort of unknown file type that will not open on my computer and is not recognized.

You have probably downloaded product package using some download software (download manager). It is required to download it using browser built-in file download feature because this process requires authentication and you may get damaged file otherwise.
